Biographies

Trio Severn came together for the Three Choirs Festival held in Gloucester in 2010.  Following their successful debut of trios by Schumann and Mendelssohn they have been performing together ever since.  Inspiration for their name came from the location of that occasion.

They appear regularly in the CBSO Centre Stage series and as guests at music clubs and festivals throughout the Midlands and Cotswolds.

Their concerts explore mainstream repertoire for piano trio by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms together with lesser known works such as the trios by Turina, Chopin, Bridge and John Ireland and also arrangements from the Palm Court repertoire.

In 2013 they made a welcome return to the Three Choirs Festival performing the piano trio by the popular local composer John Joubert who had been Composer in Residence at the Three Choirs Festival of 2010. This rarely heard work received a repeat performance in Birmingham and was warmly received.

All three players are connected with musical life in Birmingham.  In 2014 as part of the CBSO’s complete Beethoven Symphony Cycle with Andris Nelsons, Trio Severn was invited to give two pre-concert performances in Symphony Hall of Beethoven piano trios. They are currently exploring the complete Beethoven works for this genre.

Zoe Beyers is Associate Leader of the CBSO with whom she performs both as leader and soloist.  She guest leads the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia and BBC Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras, returning to her homeland of South Africa as soloist and director.  She is a member of the Hebrides Ensemble which performs throughout Europe as well as the UK.

David Powell is Sub-Principal cellist with the CBSO having worked with many of the major UK orchestras.  He studied with Jacqueline du Pre and Bernard Greenhouse from the Beaux Arts piano trio. He has taught at the University of Nottingham and is a founder member of the Montpellier String Trio.

Robert Markham is Accompanist in Residence and Piano Tutor at the Birmingham Conservatoire.  He studied at the Juilliard School in New York and was a finalist in the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow.  He also appears regularly with other members of the CBSO and his many solo and chamber music performances concerts extend throughout the UK and abroad.
