Biography and programme

The band formed as a drum and fife band in 1893, converting to the fashionable brass band in 1895. In the 1900’s the band began competing under the baton of George Aston, but during the 30’s and 40’s a decline in industry saw membership drop and so it’s attendance at contests.

The establishment of a new town, Telford, saw rejuvenation in the county and a revival under the baton of Wayne Ruston, Promotion to the 3rd section and then to the newly created 1st Section the band became a “Strong West Midland Outfit”

In the 2000s Conductor collaborations with Chris Lewis, John Mains, Ian Dickinson, Ian Viney and Nigel Seamen saw the band become a championship band for the first time in its history.

2009 Simon Platford led the bands most successful contesting run including Butlins, Pontins Champions, Spring Festival and back to back Midlands First Section Regional Champions in 2015 & 16.

A spell under the baton of David Maplestone saw another Finals appearance in 2021.

From 2022 the band started a new chapter re-appointing Simon Platford as Resident Conductor with the talented Ryan Richards being appointed Musical Director to continue the bands history of success both on the contest and concert stage

The band enjoys a varied concert calendar appearing around Shropshire and further afield which has included appearances in stage productions of Brassed Off as well as TV and radio appearances on Big Breakfast, Radio 3 Breakfast.
